Vertical blinds remain one of the most practical and cost-effective window covering options for New Zealand homes — particularly across wide windows and sliding doors where other blind styles can become heavy, awkward, or expensive
Because they are made to measure, each set is sized precisely to your opening, ensuring smooth operation, clean alignment, and a tailored finish that looks intentional rather than off-the-shelf
When properly manufactured with correctly sized headrails, quality control mechanisms, and durable fabric vanes, vertical blinds provide reliable light control, privacy, and long-term performance
Vertical blinds are especially well suited to ranch sliders, patio doors, and wider living room windows
Unlike roller blinds that lift up and down, vertical blinds draw sideways — making them practical for everyday access to decks and outdoor areas. You can partially stack them to one side, split them from the centre, or open them fully depending on the configuration of your space
For large spans, they remain lightweight and easy to operate, without the added weight and strain found in very large horizontal blinds
The rotating vanes allow you to control the angle of light throughout the day
Tilt them open to maintain your view while softening glare, angle them for privacy without darkening the room, or close them fully when needed
Available in light-filtering and blockout fabrics, vertical blinds provide practical control in living rooms, offices, and rental properties where durability and function matter
Vertical blinds have a reputation for being budget-friendly — and they are, however quality makes the difference
Properly manufactured vertical blinds use:
Stable, well-supported headrails
Smooth running carriers
Durable NZ proven fabrics
Clean, weighted hems that hang straight
When installed correctly, they look neat, operate quietly, and sit square across the opening — avoiding the “flimsy office blind” look many people associate with older systems
Vertical blinds are particularly suited to:
Living rooms with ranch sliders
Dining areas opening to patios
Offices and commercial spaces
Rental properties needing durable, easy-care solutions
Wide bedroom windows
In tighter window reveals or very narrow openings, other blind styles may be more appropriate — but for width, practicality, and value, vertical blinds remain one of the most sensible options available
All our vertical blinds are made to measure in New Zealand using quality fabrics and properly sized components
Because each blind is custom manufactured to your exact window size, typical production time is 10–15 working days. This allows for accurate sizing, careful assembly, and proper quality control
Once complete, please allow 1–4 working days for delivery, depending on your location, or we’ll schedule installation if you’ve selected our service option
Made in NZ. Built to operate smoothly and last
Vertical blinds are available in a wide range of colours, textures, and finishes to suit modern and traditional interiors alike. Use the fabric selector below to filter by colour group and explore light-filtering (LF) and blockout (BO) options. If you’re unsure which fabric will work best in your space, you can request loan samples after receiving your quote so you can review colours and textures at home before confirming
Our vertical blinds are available in a wide range of light-filtering and blockout fabrics, sourced from reputable suppliers with New Zealand-based support
We select fabrics for durability, colour stability, smooth tracking, and long-term performance. Proper fabric weight and construction ensure the vanes hang straight, stack neatly, and operate without twisting or distortion over time
Whether you want to soften glare in a bright living area or improve privacy in a street-facing room, the right fabric choice makes all the difference
Vertical blinds fall into two main fabric types:
Light-filtering fabrics
Allow natural light into the room while reducing glare and maintaining daytime privacy. Ideal for living rooms, dining areas, and offices
Blockout fabrics
Significantly reduce incoming light and improve privacy. Popular for bedrooms, media rooms, or windows facing close neighbours
The best option depends on your room orientation, privacy needs, and how much natural light you want to retain
All our vertical blinds are made to measure in New Zealand using fabrics and components selected for local conditions
That means colour stability under strong UV exposure, durable stitching and hems, and materials suited to everyday residential, commercial, and rental use
When properly specified and installed, vertical blinds provide a reliable, practical solution that performs well year after year
Vertical blind fabrics are available in:
Clean, minimalist plains
Subtle textured weaves
Modern neutral tones
Deeper greys, browns and soft blues for contrast
Neutral shades remain the most popular choice in NZ homes because they integrate easily with changing décor over time. However, textured fabrics can add depth and interest without overwhelming a space
Accurate measuring ensures your made-to-measure vertical blinds sit straight, stack correctly, and operate smoothly. The process is simple — but precision matters. Take your time and record all measurements in millimetres (mm). The steps below show the standard inside-fit measuring method, where the vertical blind is fitted inside the window jamb. If outside fit is more suitable — for example over sliding doors, ranch sliders, shallow jambs, or large handles — downloadable measuring PDFs for both inside and outside fit options are provided further down this section
Measure the inside width of the window jamb where the vertical blind will sit — inside edge to inside edge. Take three measurements: measure at the top, in the middle, and near the bottom. Record the smallest width in millimetres. Using the smallest measurement ensures your vertical blinds fit neatly inside the jamb without rubbing or binding. Always measure level and from wood to wood
Measure the inside height from the top of the jamb to the sill or floor. Take three measurements: on the left, in the centre, and on the right. Record the shortest drop in millimetres. If your vertical blinds will drop to the floor, check carefully for high points in carpet, tiles, or uneven flooring. Even small variations can cause the vanes to hang unevenly or drag when the blind is operated. Using the shortest drop prevents the vanes from touching the floor or sill and keeps them hanging straight. Do not assume the floor is level — measure properly
When requesting a quote, enter your measurements as: Width × Drop (in millimetres). If you’re selecting professional measuring and installation, approximate measurements are fine for pricing. Final dimensions will be confirmed before manufacturing. For DIY orders, measurements must be accurate before production begins, as each vertical blind is custom made
Installing made-to-measure vertical blinds is straightforward for confident DIYers
Vertical blinds are commonly fitted inside the window jamb for a clean, built-in look. However, for ranch sliders, shallow jambs, or large handles, an outside fit above the architrave is sometimes the more practical option
The steps below outline standard inside fit installation (as shown onscreen). Detailed installation PDFs for both inside and outside fit vertical blinds are available further down the page
Before fixing anything:
Confirm each blind is matched to the correct window
Check the control side (left or right)
Leave the vanes secured until the head track is installed
You’ll need:
Phillips head screwdriver or drill
Tape measure and pencil
Brackets and screws (supplied)
Step ladder (if required)
Taking a few extra minutes here prevents alignment issues later
For inside-recess installation:
Fix the first two brackets approximately 150mm in from each end
Position brackets so the front of the head track will sit neatly within the reveal
Space remaining brackets evenly across the width (typically up to 1000 mm apart)
Ensure all brackets are straight and level before tightening fully
Check for window handles, latches, or obstructions to ensure the vanes can rotate freely once installed. Correct bracket alignment ensures smooth stacking and long-term operation
With brackets secured:
Hook the front of the head track into the bracket
Rotate the back upward until it clicks firmly into place
Confirm all brackets are fully engaged
Attach each vane to the carriers, ensuring it hangs straight, untwisted, and facing the correct way
Once installed:
Rotate the vanes fully open and closed
Draw the blind across to confirm smooth stacking
Check for even alignment across the width
Always rotate the vanes open before drawing them across or opening a sliding door
Prefer not to DIY? We offer professional measuring and installation in most main centres across NZ. Downloadable installation guides for inside and outside fit vertical blinds are available below
All our made-to-measure vertical blinds come with a 5-year warranty, covering defects in materials, components, and workmanship under normal residential use
We use quality fabrics, reinforced headrails, and reliable tracking systems. Every blind is checked before leaving production to ensure smooth operation and proper alignment
Vertical blinds are built for everyday living — but like any window furnishing, they must be measured correctly, installed properly, and cared for as intended
Manufacturing defects
Component failure (headrail, carriers, tilt mechanism)
Workmanship issues
Incorrect measuring or installation
Accidental damage or misuse
Improper cleaning or maintenance
Normal wear and tear over time
If something doesn’t seem right, send us a clear photo and short description. In many cases we can assist remotely or supply replacement components without needing the full blind returned.

Are vertical blinds still a good option?
Yes — vertical blinds are still a very practical option, especially for wide windows, ranch sliders, sliding doors, bi-folds, offices, and rental properties.
They remain popular because they are affordable, easy to operate, and provide flexible light control and privacy. Modern vertical blinds are cleaner and better made than the old office-style versions many people remember.
If you want a simple, made-to-measure blind for a large opening, vertical blinds are still one of the most cost-effective choices.
Where do vertical blinds work best?
Vertical blinds work great on larger window areas such as sliding doors, ranch sliders, bi-fold doors, patio doors, offices, and wide living room windows.
Because the vanes draw sideways rather than lifting up and down, they are especially practical where regular access is needed through a door. They also suit rental properties and commercial spaces where durability, affordability, and easy operation matter.
They also work well on standard or smaller windows too — especially where you want privacy, light control, and a cost-effective made-to-measure blind.
Are vertical blinds good for sliding doors and ranch sliders?
Yes — vertical blinds are one of the most practical blind options for sliding doors and ranch sliders.
They move sideways in the same direction as the door, making access easy without needing to raise the whole blind. You can tilt the vanes for privacy and light control, draw the blind across to cover the glass, or stack it neatly to one side when you want the opening clear.
For ranch sliders with shallow jambs or large handles, an outside fit above the architrave is often the better option.
Are vertical blinds good for large windows?
Yes — vertical blinds are very well suited to large windows because they remain lightweight and easy to operate across wider spans.
Large horizontal blinds can become heavy and place more strain on cords and mechanisms. Vertical blinds avoid much of that issue because the vanes hang individually from a headrail and track sideways.
For big living room windows, office windows, and wide openings, vertical blinds are a practical and affordable made-to-measure option.
Are vertical blinds good for rental properties?
Yes — vertical blinds are often a good choice for rental properties because they are cost-effective, easy to use, and practical across large windows and sliding doors.
They provide privacy, light control, and a clean finish without the higher cost of some premium blind options. Individual vanes can also often be replaced if damaged, rather than replacing the entire blind.
For rentals where durability and budget matter, vertical blinds are a sensible option.
Are vertical blinds suitable for offices and commercial spaces?
Yes — vertical blinds are commonly used in offices and commercial spaces because they cover large windows well and offer easy glare and privacy control.
The tilting vanes allow staff to reduce sun and screen glare without making the room completely dark. They also stack neatly to the side when full light or access is needed.
For offices, meeting rooms, reception areas, and commercial rentals, vertical blinds remain a practical and economical option.
Are vertical blinds private?
Yes — vertical blinds can provide very good privacy when the vanes are tilted closed.
During the day, you can angle the vanes to reduce visibility from outside while still allowing some light into the room. At night, closing the vanes gives better privacy, especially with blockout fabric.
As with all blinds, privacy depends on fabric choice, fit, lighting conditions, and how fully the vanes are closed.
Do vertical blinds block light?
Vertical blinds can reduce light very well, especially when made with blockout fabric, but they are not a complete blackout system.
Light can still pass through small gaps between the vanes, around the sides, and near the headrail. For general bedroom privacy and light reduction, blockout vertical blinds can work well.
If you need the darkest room possible, especially for shift work, nurseries, or media rooms, SmartBlock™ blackout blinds are the better option.
What is the difference between light-filtering and blockout vertical blinds?
Light-filtering vertical blind fabrics soften glare and allow natural light into the room while improving daytime privacy.
Blockout vertical blind fabrics reduce light more strongly and provide better privacy when the vanes are closed. They are often chosen for bedrooms, media rooms, street-facing windows, and rental properties.
For living rooms and offices, light-filtering fabrics are often enough. For bedrooms or stronger privacy, blockout fabric is usually the better choice.
Are vertical blinds cheaper than other blinds?
Vertical blinds are usually one of the more affordable made-to-measure blind options, especially for wide windows and sliding doors.
They are often more economical than covering the same large opening with multiple roller blinds, honeycomb blinds, or shutters. The final price depends on size, fabric choice, control options, and whether DIY or professional installation is selected.
If budget is important, vertical blinds are definitely worth considering.
What is the most economical vertical blind fabric?
Our most economical vertical blind fabric range is DAWN.
It is a good starting point if you want practical, affordable vertical blinds without stepping into higher-priced designer or specialty fabrics. This can be especially useful for rental properties, offices, garages, and larger jobs where budget matters.
If your initial quote is higher than expected, ask us to price the same vertical blinds in DAWN so you can compare.
Can I request vertical blind fabric samples?
Yes — loan samples can be arranged after your quote has been prepared.
Once you know the pricing is within budget, you can narrow your preferred fabrics down to around 3–4 ranges using the fabric selector. We can then send loan samples so you can check colour, texture, and light control in your own space before confirming.
For some this is more useful than choosing from a computer screen alone.
Vertical blinds vs roller blinds — which is better?
Vertical blinds vs curtains — which should I choose?
Vertical blinds are usually the better choice if you want something practical, affordable, easy to clean, and compact.
Curtains can provide a softer look and better fullness, but they usually take up more room and can cost more, especially across large doors or wide windows. Vertical blinds stack neatly to the side and give easy control over privacy and light.
We do not sell curtains, but if you want a practical made-to-measure solution for sliding doors or rentals, vertical blinds are often the simpler choice.
What size vanes or blades do your vertical blinds use?
Our vertical blinds are available with 89mm or 100mm vanes.
The 89mm vane is the more modern and popular choice. It gives a cleaner look and suits most homes well.
The 100mm vane creates slightly wider gaps between vanes when open, which can give a little more view through the blind. This can be useful where maintaining outlook is important.
Should I choose 89mm or 100mm vertical blind vanes?
Most customers choose the 89mm vanes.
They are the more modern, popular option and suit most NZ homes, rentals, offices, and sliding doors. The 100mm vane can be useful where you want slightly larger gaps between vanes when open, giving more view through the blind.
If you are unsure, 89mm is usually the safer default choice.
Can vertical blinds be fitted inside the window jamb?
Yes — vertical blinds can be fitted inside the window jamb if there is enough clear depth without handles or obstructions in the way.
As a guide, allow around 50mm clear jamb depth for 89mm vanes and around 60mm clear jamb depth for 100mm vanes. This space needs to be free of handles, latches, or anything else that could stop the vanes rotating properly.
Inside fit gives a clean, built-in look and is often preferred for standard windows. With ranch sliders and sliding doors, the jamb is often shallow and the handles can get in the way — in those cases, outside fit above the architrave is usually the better option.
Measuring instructions for both inside fit and outside fit vertical blinds are provided in the measuring section.
Can vertical blinds be outside mounted?
Yes — vertical blinds can be outside mounted, and this is often the best approach for ranch sliders, shallow jambs, large handles, or when you want better coverage.
For outside fit, the ideal headrail extension is usually around 100mm past the window opening on each side. The drop should generally start around 50mm above the top of the frame and finish at the sill or floor, whichever applies to your window or door.
See the measuring section and downloadable measuring PDFs for the correct inside-fit and outside-fit methods.
How do I measure vertical blinds for a ranch slider?
For ranch sliders, first decide whether inside fit or outside fit is more suitable.
Inside fit may work if there is enough clear jamb depth and the door handles do not interfere. As a guide, allow around 50mm clear depth for 89mm vanes and around 60mm clear depth for 100mm vanes. This space needs to be free of handles, latches, or anything else that could stop the vanes rotating properly.
If the jamb is shallow or the handle projects into the reveal, outside fit above the architrave is usually better. For outside fit, allow extra width for overlap and privacy, and consider which side the blind will stack to.
If you want the blind to clear the glass completely when open, add the approximate stacking width to the stacking side. Measuring instructions for both inside fit and outside fit vertical blinds are provided in the measuring section.
Which way can vertical blinds stack?
Vertical blinds can be made to stack to the left, stack to the right, or centre open with the vanes stacking evenly on both sides.
Left or right stack is common when the door opens from one side, or when furniture makes one side more practical.
Centre opening can work well on large windows or doors where you want a balanced look and have enough wall space for the stack on both sides.
When ordering, you'll be asked which side you want the control chains on and which side you want the blind to stack to.
How much room do vertical blinds take up when stacked?
The stacking width depends on the overall blind width. The wider the vertical blind, the more room the vanes need when stacked open.
Use the guide below to estimate the approximate stacking width. Find your blind width, then allow the listed stack size on the side the blind will stack to. If your blind width sits between two sizes, estimate between the two, or use the next larger width to be safe.
| Blind width | Approx. stack | Blind width | Approx. stack |
|---|
| 600mm | 130mm | 2900mm | 440mm |
| 700mm | 150mm | 3000mm | 470mm |
| 800mm | 160mm | 3100mm | 480mm |
| 900mm | 170mm | 3200mm | 500mm |
| 1000mm | 180mm | 3300mm | 510mm |
| 1100mm | 200mm | 3400mm | 530mm |
| 1200mm | 220mm | 3500mm | 540mm |
| 1300mm | 230mm | 3600mm | 550mm |
| 1400mm | 250mm | 3700mm | 560mm |
| 1500mm | 260mm | 3800mm | 585mm |
| 1600mm | 270mm | 3900mm | 600mm |
| 1700mm | 280mm | 4000mm | 605mm |
| 1800mm | 300mm | 4100mm | 630mm |
| 1900mm | 310mm | 4200mm | 640mm |
| 2000mm | 320mm | 4300mm | 660mm |
| 2100mm | 330mm | 4400mm | 670mm |
| 2200mm | 350mm | 4500mm | 690mm |
| 2300mm | 360mm | 4600mm | 705mm |
| 2400mm | 380mm | 4700mm | 715mm |
| 2500mm | 390mm | 4800mm | 720mm |
| 2600mm | 410mm | 4900mm | 730mm |
| 2700mm | 420mm | 5000mm | 735mm |
| 2800mm | 430mm |
If the blind stacks left or right, allow the full stack width on that side. If the blind is centre opening, the stack is split across both sides.
If you want the glass, ranch slider, or doorway completely clear when the blind is open, add the approximate stacking width to the stacking side when measuring for an outside fit.
What is the maximum size for vertical blinds?
The maximum single vertical blind width is 5000mm.
For blinds up to 3000mm wide, the maximum drop is 3000mm. For wider blinds up to 5000mm, the maximum drop is 2700mm.
Very large headrails are more difficult to freight safely, so for openings wider than 5000mm we would recommend splitting the opening into two separate vertical blinds.
If you are planning to install two vertical blinds side by side on a wide opening, let us know when ordering so we can make the correct manufacturing allowances to provide the best possible centre overlap where they meet.
Can two vertical blinds meet in the middle on a very wide opening?
Yes — for very wide openings, two separate vertical blinds can be made to meet in the middle.
Where required, we provide with a 25mm overlap in the middle to reduce the gap between the two blinds. There is no extra charge for this overlap request, but it must be clearly included with your order instructions.
The butting vertical blinds is often the best solution when the opening is too wide (over 5m) for one safe-to-ship headrail.
What headrail colours are available?
Vertical blind headrails are available in White, Cream, or Black.
Most customers choose a headrail colour that blends with the window frame, wall colour, or fabric choice. White is the most common option for modern interiors, while Cream can suit warmer tones and Black can work well with darker joinery or feature interiors.
Bottom weights are also available in White, Cream, or Black.
Headrail and bottom weight colour choices are confirmed when proceeding with your order.
Should I choose bottom chains or chain-less bottom weights?
Vertical blinds can be made with chained bottom weights or chain-less bottom weights.
Bottom chains help stabilise the vanes and reduce movement, especially if there is airflow or a breeze. Chain-less weights create a cleaner, more contemporary look, but the vanes can sway more easily.
If practicality matters most, choose bottom chains. If a cleaner modern look matters more, chain-less weights may be worth considering.
Are vertical blinds easy to clean?
Yes — vertical blinds are generally easy to clean and maintain.
Surface dust can usually be removed with a duster or microfibre cloth. Many fabrics can also be lightly wiped with a damp cloth, but avoid harsh chemicals, abrasive cleaners, or soaking the fabric.
Regular light cleaning helps keep the fabric looking fresh and prevents dust from building up over time.
Can I replace vertical blind vanes without replacing the whole blind?
In many cases, yes — individual vertical blind vanes can be replaced without replacing the full headrail.
This is useful if a vane is damaged, stained, or worn while the rest of the blind is still working well. Due to manufacturing variables, we only provide replacement vanes for vertical blinds originally purchased from us.
Ideally, we need to identify the original order so we can match the fabric colour, vane size, and vane length as closely as possible. If your vertical blind is older, replacement vanes may not match perfectly due to fabric changes or minor fading over time, but it can still be a practical repair option. Get in contact if you need replacement vertical blind vanes.
What warranty do your vertical blinds have?
Our vertical blinds come with a 5-year warranty covering defects in materials, components, and workmanship under normal use.
The warranty does not cover incorrect measuring, incorrect installation, misuse, accidental damage, improper maintenance, or normal wear and tear. Some colour fading and minor fabric changes can occur over time under New Zealand’s strong UV conditions.
See the warranty section for full details and the downloadable warranty document.
What can go wrong with vertical blinds?
Vertical blinds are generally simple and reliable, especially when measured and installed using the instructions provided.
The most common issues are usually minor — vanes not rotating evenly, something obstructing movement inside the headrail, or the blind being forced instead of operated correctly.
If the vanes do not rotate evenly, the blind may need to be pulled fully one way and then the other to reset the carriers. If the blind feels hard to draw open, look up into the headrail and check for any obvious obstruction, jammed carrier, or anything preventing smooth movement.
Always rotate the vanes open before drawing the blind across, and avoid pushing through the vanes when opening a window or door.
