You don’t need a site visit — just follow these simple steps (and discuss them with your builder) to help confirm the best size, mounting method, and setup for your space. These steps ensure the awning will be properly supported and deliver the shade you’re after Visualise the Installation Look at the area where the awning will attach — usually above a sliding door, French doors, or window. You’ll need a solid fixing point like exposed framing or a lintel — never install directly onto cladding alone. If you’re unsure about the structure behind, consult your builder or a qualified installer. Check for obstacles like downpipes, eaves, light fittings or security cameras that could interfere with installation or projection. If in doubt, a quick photo will help us advise
Measure the width of the area you want covered. This is the horizontal span the awning will shade. You’ll generally want it to extend slightly wider than the opening, if possible. Awnings are made to order and can't be modified later, so identify any restrictions before ordering (e.g. walls or posts) on either side or in the way 💡 Tip: For visual balance, allow some overhang either side of the door or window
This is how far out the awning will extend from the wall. Think about the sun angle and what you want to shade — just the glass, or your outdoor table and chairs as well? Projection options vary based on your selected awning width — as a rule, the projection must be equal to or less than the width. For example, a 2.5m projection requires at least a 2.5m width 💡 If your width is limited, we can advise on max projection and angle options to get the most coverage
Photos make it easy for us to confirm what will work and advise you. Please include: A straight-on shot of the wall (where the awning will attach) A side view showing eaves, soffits, or obstructions Any close-ups of tricky areas (e.g. downpipes or sloped cladding)

Do you supply retractable awnings nationwide in NZ?
Yes – we supply Ellipse Monobloc retractable awnings to homes and businesses anywhere in New Zealand. Whether you’re in Auckland, Tauranga, Wellington, Christchurch, Dunedin, or anywhere in between, we’ve got you covered
Delivery is nationwide, either to your nearest Mainfreight depot or directly to your home for an additional fee – see “Is freight included in my quote?” for details
Can I buy awnings online and install them myself?
Yes – our awnings are DIY‑friendly and available nationwide. We supply everything you need for installation, including clear instructions and guidance on measuring and fixing points
Installation is straightforward for a competent builder or handyman – someone confident with tools, able to drill into solid surfaces, and able to follow basic plans. You’ll need:
A solid mounting surface (e.g. wall, fascia, or beam)
Two people to lift and position the awning
A qualified electrician if motorisation is chosen (for power routing and connection)
Important: To ensure your awning is installed safely and correctly, and to uphold any applicable warranties, installation must be carried out by a competent installer. We are not responsible for damage caused by incorrect or insufficient installation
How long does it take to get a made‑to‑order awning?
Standard lead time is 6–8 weeks for manufacturing, plus approximately 1 week for delivery depending on your location in New Zealand
All Ellipse Monobloc awnings are made-to-order right here in NZ, ensuring a tailored fit and high-quality finish
Seasonal demand: Lead times may increase slightly during peak periods (especially spring and summer), so we recommend ordering ahead to avoid delays – particularly if you're planning for outdoor entertaining
Optional extras may affect timing:
Upgrades such as custom powder coat colours, may add 1–2 weeks to the production schedule depending on supplier timing and demand
Tip: To stay on track, it’s wise to get your quote sorted early and book in your installer or electrician (if motorised) ahead of time
Do you install awnings in my city?
We install retractable awnings across Greater Auckland using our trained team
If you're located outside Auckland, we’ll supply your awning as a complete DIY kit, with support and advice for your own installer or builder. This is a common approach for clients across NZ, and we’re happy to guide your installer through the key steps if needed
Just note that:
Installation should be done by a competent builder or handyman
A licensed electrician is required to install power for motorised units
Incorrect installation may void your warranty
Is a retractable awning installation easy to do myself?
Yes – if you're handy or have a competent builder helping. We make it as simple as possible with clear instructions and tips for measuring, fixing and power setup. Just make sure you have solid surfaces to mount into and follow best practices
What height should I mount my awning?
To ensure headroom of at least 1.8 m at the front of the awning follow the below guide:
Projection | Min. mounting height |
---|---|
1.5 m | 2027 mm |
2.0 m | 2071 mm |
2.5 m | 2115 mm |
3.0 m | 2158 mm |
3.5 m | 2202 mm |
4.0 m | 2932 mm |
We can help confirm the exact fixing height for your particular awning order
What surfaces can I fix my awning to?
Awnings can be:
Face fixed (standard) – To a wall or fascia (brackets included)
Soffit/top fixed – To an overhead structure using optional soffit brackets ($90 ea).
Ensure your awning is fixed into solid structural framing – not just cladding. If you’re unsure about the strength or suitability of your fixing points, check with a certified builder before installation
For soffit bracket pricing and quantities, see How many soffit brackets do I need?
How many soffit brackets do I need?
Most customers face-fix their awning to a solid wall, as this is the most common and straightforward installation method. Standard face-fix brackets are included in your quote
If you’re planning a soffit or top fix installation, you’ll need soffit brackets, which cost extra (see ‘What optional extras are available?’ FAQ for pricing).
How many soffit/top fix brackets you'll need depends on awning width and projection:
Any width and ≤ 2.5 m projection – 3 brackets
≤ 5 m wide × 3 m projection – 3 brackets
5–6 m wide × 3 m projection – 5 brackets
≤ 5 m wide × 3.5–4 m projection – 4 brackets
5–6 m wide × 3.5–4 m projection – 5 brackets
Tip: Ensure all fixings are into solid framing, not just cladding. If you’re unsure, check with a certified builder to confirm suitability, Always fix to structural timber or steel
Do I need council consent to install an awning in NZ?
Usually no – residential awnings under 30 m² and set more than 1.5 m from boundaries generally don’t require consent. Check with your local council if unsure
Do I need an electrician if I choose a motorised awning?
Yes – a qualified electrician is required to route power to the awning location and safely connect and terminate the motor. We’ll guide you on what’s needed for a compliant and reliable installation
Can I control my awning from an app?
Yes – with the Alpha Neo Wi‑Fi Hub ($630) and the free Neo Smart Blinds app, you can:
Open, close, and stop remotely
Set timers and schedules
Integrate with smart home routines
Pair with wind or motion sensors for safety
How does the manual version of the awning work?
It operates via a removable crank handle:
Insert into the crank winding eye
Turn to extend or retract the awning
Remove the handle when done
Simple, reliable, and ideal for smaller awnings
Do the crank handles come in set lengths? What’s most common?
Yes – our manual awning crank handles come in five set lengths:
800mm, 1200mm, 1600mm, 2000mm, and 2400mm, in your choice of black, white, or grey finish
The most popular option is the 1200mm handle, which balances reach and usability for most residential installs. We’ll help you choose the best length based on your awning height and available access space
Tip: If mounting your awning higher than 2.5 m, consider a longer crank for ease of use
What sizes are available for your awnings?
Our Ellipse Monobloc awnings range from 2.02m to 6m wide with a maximum projection (throw) of 4m – perfect for most NZ decks, patios and outdoor entertaining spaces
IMPORTANT: The projection must always be less than the width – this ensures safe operation, tensioning, and mounting
Here are typical width-to-projection requirements:
Projection | Min. Width Required |
---|
1.5 m | 2020 mm |
2.0 m | 2420 mm |
2.5 m | 2920 mm |
3.0 m | 3430 mm |
3.5 m | 3988 mm |
4.0 m | 4588 mm |
TIP: If you need help choosing the optimal size for your space just send us photos and measurements and we’ll confirm the perfect fit
Do you offer custom awnings for unique decks or patios?
Yes – we can customise width and projection to suit most outdoor areas, up to 6m wide × 4m throw. Every awning is made to order, so we can accommodate tricky layouts or uncommon spaces
TIP: Send us photos and measurements and we’ll confirm the best setup for your space
What is the cost of a retractable awning in NZ?
Pricing depends on size and whether motorisation is required. As a guide:
Manual models – from $3,650 (3 m width × 1.5 m projection)
Motorised models – from $4,900 (same size)
Larger sizes and additional features increase the cost. Optional extras such as wind sensors or hood covers, etc are available – see What are the optional extras for my awning? for details
How do I get a quote for an awning?
Simply provide:
Width & projection measurements
Photos of your install area
Any motorisation preference
We’ll confirm sizing, options, and pricing with a return quote
What are the optional extras for my awning?
Looking to customise your awning or add extra convenience? Choose from a range of optional upgrades to enhance both the look and performance of your Ellipse Monobloc:
Adjustable pitch control – $405
Custom powder coat metal parts – $810
Alpha Neo Wi‑Fi Hub – $630
Motion sensor (automatically retracts motorised awnings when wind picks up) – for added safety – $530
How much does motorisation add to the awning price?
Motorisation adds $700 per awning. Recommended for larger awnings and for app/sensor integration
Is freight included in my awning quote?
Yes and no – it depends how you want to receive your awning:
Depot collection – Included
Your quote includes free delivery to your nearest Mainfreight depot. This is the most cost‑effective option and works well if you have a vehicle suitable for collection and a helping hand. A mid sized awning is a good 30kg
Residential delivery – +$50 per awning
We can usually have your awning delivered direct to your home, depending on where you live, for a small additional fee. Keep in mind these awnings are a two‑person lift – you’ll need someone to help you move the awning when it arrives
What colours are available for the awning brackets, base and folding arms etc?
Our awning hardware – including the brackets, folding arms, and front bar – is powder‑coated for durability and style
Standard colours – White, Silver, and Matt Black (included in the price)
These three finishes suit most Kiwi homes and provide a clean, modern look
Custom colours – $692 per order
If you want your awning to blend seamlessly with your joinery, roofline, or cladding, we can custom powder‑coat the frame, etc in almost any colour from the Dulux® or Interpon® range. This is a popular choice for architectural homes or when you want the awning to disappear into your exterior
What are the awning arms, brackets, and frame made of?
Ellipse Monobloc awnings are built from powder-coated aluminium for maximum strength, corrosion resistance, and lightness. All critical components – including the arms, base bar, front bar, and wall brackets – are made of aluminium
All visible fixings and assembly hardware are high-grade stainless steel, ensuring long life in New Zealand’s diverse climates, including coastal areas
No rust, no rot – just clean, durable performance
Are awnings suitable for windy or rainy conditions?
Our awnings are designed as sun shelters. With a 15°+ pitch, they can handle light rain, but heavy rain, high winds, or hail can damage both the fabric and frame. Always retract your awning in bad weather to protect your investment
For extra peace of mind, consider adding a motion sensor, which automatically retracts the awning if wind levels become unsafe
Can the awning pitch be adjusted to prevent water pooling?
Yes – set at 15° or more to allow water to run off. Shallow pitch can cause pooling and fabric damage
Can the Ellipse awning handle damp or humid NZ conditions?
Yes – Docril® fabric is mildew‑resistant, but always dry before retracting to prevent mildew or condensation marks
How should I care for my awning?
Retract during high winds or heavy rain
Dry completely before rolling away
Clean every 6 months with soft brush + mild detergent
Check fasteners annually and lubricate moving parts with silicone spray
Avoid BBQ smoke or chemicals under the awning
What fabrics and colours do you offer?
We use premium Docril® acrylic canvas from Spain (80+ colours and patterns) which carry a 10‑year UV warranty. See all the colours and patterns available in our colours section
Is there a valance along the front of the awning?
Yes – a removable fabric valance is included as standard with every Ellipse Monobloc awning at no extra charge
Most customers keep the valance attached for aesthetic and sun-shading purposes. However, if you prefer a cleaner look, it can be removed. The valance simply slides into a discreet channel along the front bar and is held securely in place by the end caps
This finishing touch helps block low-angle sun and adds a polished edge to the awning’s profile. The valance uses the same fabric you choose for the awning itself
Where can I find your awning brochures?
Below you can download our Ellipse Monobloc awning brochures as handy PDFs for planning and reference. They include:
Reference full fabric and colour ranges – including 80 Docril® acrylic canvas colours and 21 Soltis Lounge 96 mesh colours
Optional extras and upgrades – motorisation, Neo Wi‑Fi hub for app control, motion sensors, and powder‑coat colours
Technical details and sizing charts – width, projection, required bracket quantities, and minimum mounting heights for safe installation. Awning schematics
These brochures are ideal for sharing with your builder or designer to confirm sizes, fixings, and finish choices before you order
